There is music that arrives like a train, on time, and there is music that arrives like the tides—in its own time, with no fixed schedule.

Those of us who’ve followed Philip Parfitt’s music over the years have seen it go through a series of seeming changes—from the garage crunch of his band The Perfect Disaster in the eighties, the wide-screen psychedelia of Oedipussy in the nineties, and most recently the gentler, more folk-derived strains of 2014’s I’m Not the Man I Used to Be—without ever quite changing at all. The elements, and the instruments, change, but the core remains stable, and in some sense eternal. Barring a few production elements and drum beats in Parfitt’s nineties output, you’d be hard pressed to say when these records were made. But you would never, ever have to ask yourself why.

“Somebody Called Me In,” Parfitt’s first new release in over five years, prefigures an album that is coming soon, and to an extent it builds upon the palette of I’m Not the Man I Used to Be: the ghosts of Nick Drake and of the Velvet Underground in 3 AM-mode preside in a song that is itself about ghosts, the enigmatic lure of certain places. What’s new, perhaps, is the song’s rich architecture. Like a great dub record—and like all the best records, really—“Somebody Called Me In” carries silence in its back pocket, and uses its feeling of space to create something you can live inside. Acoustic guitars, voices—both Parfitt’s own and a woman’s—strings, whispers, drones: the whole thing has a feel of a physical structure being built around you and erased simultaneously. To call it ‘beautiful’ or ‘organic’ (and boy, is it both of those things) is to half-miss the point. It’s here, raising all the hairs on the back of your neck, and then it’s gone, having broken your heart. And the only thing to do is to play it again.
